True heroes save people, they don’t shoot
people. Let’s cheer for Lassana Bathily, the Muslim who works at the kosher
store Hyper Cacher in Paris, and saved a dozen people. LINK

Whites carry their guns around in public,
and they’re patriots protecting their rights. Blacks carry their guns around
and the Right is ready to start lynch parties.
An African American said that the best way
to get real gun control would be for hordes of black people to join the NRA.
“Conservatives love love LOVE the Second
Amendment right up until the point where black people start exercising it….
“White militants are angry about imaginary
oppression while the black ones are angry about very real oppression. Clearly,
that means the black ones are ‘thugs’ and the white ones are ‘patriots.’”

Well worth pondering: a rabbi writes about
the Charlie incident.
“Individual human liberties is not our
highest value. Our highest value is treating human beings with love, kindness,
generosity, respect and see them as embodiments of the holy, and treating the
earth as sacred. Individual liberty is a strategy to promote this highest
value, but when that liberty gets abused (as for example in demeaning women,
African Americans, gays in public discourse) we often insist that the
articulators of racism, sexism and homophobia be publicly humiliated (not shut
down, but using our free speech to vigorously challenge theirs). 2. Free speech
is not defeated when we use it to try to marginalize hateful or demeaning
speech. So let’s call demeaning speech, including demeaning humor, what it
really is -- an assault on the dignity of human beings.”

The Atlantic Monthly asked illustrators to
comment on the Charlie incident. This one is my favorite, by Brian Stauffer.
Many people are saying, Je Suis Charlie, or more pointedly, Je Suis Ahmed. As for me, Je Suis The Guy Who Hid Under the Sink.

The
French have a strange way of celebrating New Year: “France's Interior Ministry
says 940 cars were set alight by revelers ringing in the New Year — 12 percent
fewer than the 1,067 set aflame last year.” Well, I guess it beats eating
snails, just so it’s not my car.

The mystery of the meefucu: English
follows.
Stories of the Tsou (Cou) tribe in the
mountains of central Taiwan tell of the meefucu, who are said to be little
black people. They were tricky and did all sorts of bad things, and they even
stole people’s children. So if a child was misbehaving, parents would threaten
them, “I’ll put you outside in the dark and the meefucu will take you away!”
Apu’u Peongsi / Esther Wang has passed down
the story of “the hand in the dark,” about a meefucu who hid in dark places and
stole hunters’ meat. In short, the meefucu were nothing but trouble.
But if you ask the Tsou, who were the meefucu?
Their answers are vague: maybe the Paiwan tribe? The problem is, the Paiwan don’t
live close to the Tsou; in between are Bunung and Kanakanavu, so why would the
Paiwan go to all that trouble to steal some meat?
Centuries ago, Tsou territory stretched to
the sea near what is now Tainan. In the 16th century, the Dutch
tried to colonize Taiwan, starting from Tainan, but fortunately Koxinga chased
them out. This is well known. What is not so well known is that the Dutch brought
slaves from Africa to do their hard work for them, and when the Dutch left,
some slaves were abandoned. They established a village in northern Tainan, but
eventually died out. Almost nothing remains of their presence. The Black Demon
Well in Tainan is probably the site of their old village. I recall that in an
old temple, I forget just which one, the decorations on the wall clearly show Black
African people.
Perhaps the meefucu of the Tsou tales
records their encounters with these abandoned Africans, stranded far from home.
It’s possible that they were not familiar enough with the environment of Taiwan
so they had to steal meat from hunters. Maybe their village was dying out, so
they resorted to stealing children from the Tsou to boost their numbers. Perhaps
the only record of those Africans’ days in Taiwan is the glimpses and
recollections recorded in the Tsou stories.

The People’s Republic of China is surging
ahead on all fronts. Here are buildings under construction there.

Today, three days after the winter
solstice, people celebrate the birth of god. Very nice, but which one? The god
who as a baby, born of a virgin, was wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in
a manger, where shepherds came to adore him; when he grew up, he baptized his
disciples and held worship on Sunday; he had twelve apostles, and was
identified with the lamb and the lion; of course it goes without saying that I am
describing Mithra, the Indo-Persian god who was born on December 25 in about
3,500 BC. His religion spread to the Near East in around 1500 BC, was prevalent
in Greece and Rome, and was practiced from India to Scotland. Oh, you thought I
was talking about his understudy Jesus of Nazareth? Of course early Christians commemorated
the birth of Jesus in the spring, but since so many other gods had their
birthdays on the third day after the winter solstice, in the Middle Ages the
Pope decided that Jesus should have his birthday that day, too. Just like
Horus, Dionysus, Attis, Baal, and a bunch of others.
But whatever, the more the merrier.
Yesterday I read a story I would like to share with you. It seems that a
husband and wife were out walking in St Petersburg Square when it started to
rain or snow very lightly. It was both, neither one nor the other. As they went
along, they discussed this, but couldn’t decide if it was rain or snow. He said
rain, she said snow, an impasse. They saw the shopping mall security guard, a
communist guy named Rudolf. They thought he would be a fair judge, so they
asked him, “Rudolf, is this rain or snow?” Without a moment’s hesitation,
Rudolf said, “It’s rain.”
The wife was crestfallen. Her husband was sure Rudolf was right, so he told his wife, “Rudolf the Red knows rain, dear.”

A wonderful
Christmas story my old friend Bill sent me.
When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee Elves
did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel
the Pre-Christmas pressure.
Then Mrs. Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed
Santa even more.
When he went to harness the Reindeer, he found that three of them were
about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven
knows where. Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards
cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.
Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of
rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the Elves had drunk all the
cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped
the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the
kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the Mice had eaten all
the straw off the end of the broom.
Just then the doorbell rang, and an irritated Santa marched to the door,
yanked it open, and there stood a little Angel with a great big Christmas tree.
The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a lovely
day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?'
And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.
Not a lot of people know this.

The Taliban have shown again how brave they
are. After shooting a teenage girl, they are back on the scene again, shooting
students and teachers. It takes a lot of bravery, I suppose, to go shoot up
preschoolers, elementary students, and high school kids.
The Taliban have shown again how smart they
are. The school they attacked, the Army Public School in Peshawar, Pakistan, is in one of
the very few nations that shows any sympathy for the Taliban, and a Muslim
nation no less. Not only have they alienated their neighbors who have supported
them, but by attacking an Army school and killing many soldiers’ children, they
have alienated the Pakistan military. Good planning, no?
Even my dogs won’t attack children. For
shame!
Amitabha.

I am a hardcore environmentalist, but I have
never had patience with Greenpeace. They just don’t have sense.
Now they have trekked in to Nazca, the
ancient drawings in Peru, to post signs protesting climate warming. Not only
did they show utter disrespect for the site, but they also damaged it, maybe
irremediably.
Peruvian Culture Minister Jaime Castillo
said the act was “a slap in the face at everything Peruvians consider sacred.”
Not only Peruvians, sir.
The culprits showed their contrition by
removing themselves from Peru so they cannot be held responsible for their
acts.
Greenpeace: The future is renewable; Nazca
is not.
Sigh.

An
interesting analysis of Pearl Harbor:
Sunday, December 7th, 1941 – Admiral Chester
Nimitz was attending a concert in Washington D.C. He was paged and told there
was a phone call for him.
When he answered the phone, it was President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt on the phone. He told Admiral Nimitz that he (Nimitz)
would now be the Commander of the Pacific Fleet.
Admiral Nimitz flew to Hawaii to assume command
of the Pacific Fleet. He landed at Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve, 1941. There
was such a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat--you would have thought the
Japanese had already won the war. On Christmas Day, 1941, Adm. Nimitz was given
a boat tour of the destruction wrought on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Big
sunken battleships and navy vessels cluttered the waters everywhere you looked.
As the tour boat returned to dock, the young
helmsman of the boat asked, "Well Admiral, what do you think after seeing
all this destruction?"
Admiral Nimitz's reply shocked everyone within the sound of his voice.
Admiral Nimitz said, "The Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an
attack force could ever make, or God was taking care of America . Which do you
think it was?"
Shocked and surprised, the young helmsman asked,
"What do mean by saying the Japanese made the three biggest mistakes an
attack force ever made?"
Nimitz explained.
“Mistake number one: The Japanese attacked on Sunday morning. Nine out of every ten crewmen
of those ships were ashore on leave. If those same ships had been lured to sea
and been sunk – we would have lost 38,000 men instead of 3,800.
Mistake number two: When the Japanese saw all
those battleships lined in a row, they got so carried away sinking those
battleships, they never once bombed our dry docks opposite those ships. If they
had destroyed our dry docks, we would have had to tow every one of those ships
to America to be repaired. As it is now, the ships are in shallow water and can
be raised.
One tug can pull them over to the dry docks, and
we can have them repaired and at sea by the time we could have towed them to
America . And I already have crews ashore anxious to man those ships.Mistake number three: Every drop of fuel in the Pacific theater of war is in top-of-the-ground storage tanks five miles away over that hill. One attack plane could have strafed those tanks and destroyed our fuel supply.
That's why I say the Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could make or God was taking care of America.”

Now this is a pretty kettle of fish. It
seems that the English royal family isn’t. Isn’t royal, that is. The news report says, “Analysis of DNA from Richard III has thrown up another surprise:
evidence of infidelity in his family tree…. It could cast doubt on the Tudor claim
to the English throne.”
Now what are they to do? Hand back the
crown? Pay back rent for Buckingham Palace?
I can just hear Queen Elizabeth II now: “Well,
it’s been a lovely sixty years, and I thank you all, but I believe I will leave
this mess for my heirs to sort out.”
However,
there is good news for the old bean: Dr Anna Whitelock of the University of
London says, “The Queen’s right to reign is based on the 1701 Act of Settlement
that restricted succession to Protestant descendants of Sophia of Hanover. A
medieval false paternity does not challenge the current Queen’s right to reign.”
That’s a relief. Once you get into the habit of reigning, it’s a hard habit to break.
