Proof that I do sometimes get up at the crack of dawn. Then I very sensibly crawl back into the blankets. Moon and Venus, with the rising sun coming.

Just love Deuteronomy, the poetry, the sweetness, the rosiness. Here’s a great quote, from 28:42: Swarms of locusts will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

The most frequent sentence in Taiwan today: It’s cold! 5C, cold and rainy. I put on socks for the first time in five years.
it gets colder than this, but today really feels cold.

Eleven years ago, the Tayal painter Temu Yasa, the Picasso of Wulai, gave me three of his paintings. I treasure them.

We celebrated the fifth day of the New Year by spending the day in Buddhist ceremonies at a small temple in Pinglin. On the way back, we decided to investigate a new place in Gsyuw which apparently sells incense, as well as providing afternoon tea and dinner by reservation.
Frankly, the tea isn’t worth the trip, the coffee average. But the place itself is superior. You drink your mediocre coffee in a spacious hall decorated with superb antique Chinese furniture. What is more astonishing is the side room. About 250 years ago, the Emperor Chienlung presented his doctor with a study ~ the room ~ and it has been dismantled and moved from the mainland to Taiwan. Ching decoration runs to rococo, but the study is a perfect balance of structural beauty and apt ornamentation.
I almost forgot to mention the incense, which is refined to perfection. If you have a chance, be sure to spend some time there.

Today we went with Watan Kahat to Kmaloci village to visit Nolay Piho, the star of Sediq Bale, back to his secret identity as pastor and, in his own words, 野人/wild man. They were pounding rice into cakes, and we all got stuffed and covered with flour.
