Seeking the logic behind mundane practices can be fascinating. Consider the Mohawk hair style and the cowboy’s bushy mustache. What practical reason could there be for these vanities (monstrosities)?

The Mohawks have always been ferocious warriors. In the days before firearms, they shot at practically anything moving with their bows and arrows. In the heat of a fight, the bowstring was apt to get tangled in the warrior’s hair, so they shaved the bowstring side of their head. Then to even things out, the other side, and thus the Mohawk.

Out west, cowboys rode across high, arid, treeless plains under a sun so unforgiving that their famed cowboy hat did not always offer protection to protuberances. The protruding lips were especially vulnerable to scorching, so a bushy mustache shaded them.

But still looks awful. As to the Mohawk, 看人吧。On Abus, okay. On you, maybe not.

How extraordinarily blinded we are by our preconceptions!

I saw an interesting clip on YouTube of a Saudi cleric explaining very carefully that god created woman to have her head covered, that her hair and neck, and preferably her neck, should not be visible, and that it is a simple fact that a man who sees a woman’s neck is apt to rape her.

IMHO, I would say it is a simple, easily observable fact that the vast majority of men in this world spend their lives around women whose hair, face, and neck are uncovered, and only a tiny minority of these ever take it into their twisted little minds to rape a woman.

Rape, of course, has nothing to do with sexual pleasure, and everything to do with power and control. Maybe he meant that Saudi men are so desperately unsure of themselves that they need to assert their power and control over women.

If Saudi men were willing to submit to strictures as onerous as those they impose on their womenfolk, I might more readily honor their claims that all should obey the word of their god. Were they not so eager to degrade their women at every chance, I would more readily believe their claim to respect women.

But come again? What sort of stupid god would create a woman’s beautiful face and require it to be covered?

Before the Christians reading this blog (hello? anybody there?) get too righteous about the Saudis, please read 1 Corinthians 11: 6… if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair. Paul goes on to explain that 7: For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8: (For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9: Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.) 10: That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels.

This argument rests on the supposition that you believe that Eve was made from Adam’s rib, a supposition almost as believable as the notion that Spider Woman created humankind. I do remember enough of my days as a Lutheran to know that women were required to wear veils lest the sight of their hair stirred the angels hovering overhead to lust. In my childhood, adults rarely went out bareheaded anyway, and women always wore their hats in church; whether fashion or piety, I cannot say.

Paul continues with some marvelously self-proving logic: 14: Does not nature itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is degrading to him, 15: but if a woman has long hair, it is her pride? For her hair is given to her for a covering. Frankly, no, I have never learned from Nature that long hair degrades a man, although it does get in the way.

In Ephesians 5:24, Paul reaches the conclusion that wives should be subject in everything to their husbands. So the Muslims are far from holding a monopoly on misogyny. Or bad logic.

What happens to Viet Namese army commandos when they get discharged? Well, of course, they come to Taiwan to sell duck meat, what else would a good communist do?

Perhaps some background on this enigmatic comment is required for the younger generation: in earlier years, the dedication and purity of the communist ideals of the VN army was idolized to the point of nausea. Today’s Taiwan Yahoo has an article about police tracking down illegal immigrants ~~ Taiwan has them too, I'm legal and documented ~~ two young men working at a duck meat stand turned out to be illegal immigrants, and one of them had been in VN Special Forces. He still got caught.

He said he just wanted to "make more money." A noble motive, one I wish Ho Chi-Minh were able to hear: the voice of a new generation, brought up in communist Viet Nam. Actually, there is a large number of Viet Namese working in Taiwan, legally, illegally, and matriomonially, and to the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever detected in any of them the faintest trace of communist ideology.

He who laughs last, laughs best.

I once knew someone who went to high school in a remote region of southern China during WWII. Because of the war, the students were tucked in a secluded place where they would be safe from the marauding Japanese imperialists. Wars come and go, but the education of the youth has to continue.

As did all the other students, he lived in the dorm. He assured me that they never, ever snuck out of the dorm at night. The reason was that in the morning, they frequently found tiger tracks just outside their dorm.

That's one way to keep them indoors!

Why we always carry flashlights outdoors after dark

This morning Yumin's barking woke me up… nothing new there. He had apparently spotted a snake, and I knew he would not stop barking until I went out to thank him.

When I opened the back door, I found a snake skin draped over the door. I suppose it had just shed its skin when Yumin spotted it. This is probably the skin of a 大頭蛇 square-head snake (Taiwan tree snake, Keelung cat snake, Boiga kraepelini). They’ve been around lately. Fortunately, they are not very poisonous, and they spend most of their time in trees, but you still don't want to get bitten by one. Better to carry a flashlight, no?

The Dayan (Tayal) say that long ago, before there were people, there was a stone deep in the mountains. The stone broke open, and out walked three people: Mabuta, Mayan, and Uma. Mabuta looked around and said, Yuck! and went back inside the stone. Mayan and Uma liked what they saw, and became the father and mother of the human race. Because the boulder split open, that place has always been called Pinsbkan, which means, the place that split open.

But the Dayan are very practical people, not given to great leaps of fancy or fantasy. I have always thought it strange: the Dayan know all about where kids came from, how'd the stone get involved?

I have found fossils in the mountains and on the shores of Taiwan. You pick up a stone, open it up, and inside you may find a shell or a fish. A stone is hard and solid, how did those get inside?

Maybe ages ago, early Dayan found fossils, and figured that perhaps the earliest human beings had also come from stones.

Bad parenting award

This year's Bad Parenting Award goes to a young father I saw on the subway. His son, at most two years old, was sitting in a stroller playing with his father's IPod. Father was totally immersed in a comic book on an electronic reader. If his son said something, father replied with noticeable impatience: know your place, kid, this comic book is more important than you.

Condoms are cheap and readily available. If you don't want kids, don't have them.

In discussing the war on drugs, drug lords, drug cartels, pirates, and so forth, please take note that the most powerful, most ambitious, most ruthless, and best organized drug cartel in history is the Royal Government of the United Kingdom.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, read up on the Opium Wars.

An interesting idea to play with. If the British Royal Navy had not been so deeply involved in selling drugs, the communists might never have come to power, certainly not under Mao.

All 33 Chilean miners have been safely rescued from the pit. Pause a moment to express gratitude that they can once again see the sun and stars. Pause a moment to express gratitude that we are lucky enough that we don't have to seek our livings hundreds of meters below the surface of the earth (and if a miner reads this, good luck to you! May you never make the headlines.) Pause a moment to express admiration for the mind-boggling bravery of two barely noticed heroes: before the rescue team started pulling the miners out of the pit, a mining engineer and a medic went DOWN into the pit to ensure an orderly rescue for the trapped miners. For me, I can't begin to imagine what kind of courage that took!

The Ch'ing dynasty emperor K'anghsi (Kangxi, 1654 – 1722) studied calculus under European missionaries. It's worth noting that calculus was invented by his contemporary, Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727). In other words, the emperor was studying the most advanced, modern science of his day.

At midnight, a little bird tried to fly into our study. Even though it couldn't get in through the glass, this was a much more pleasant encounter than Poe and his Raven.

I believe this little fellow is a Fulvetta (alcippe brunnea).

Once upon a midnight sleepy, while I pondered weak and bleary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber window.
''Tis some visitor,' I muttered, 'tapping at my chamber window -
Only this, and nothing more.'

….quoth the fulvetta, Go to sleep!

Not a dumb bird, you know?

"Niam reten a langat ka Pazih sen." Our tribe is called the Pazih.

Some years ago, scholars and experts proclaimed the death of Pazih, an aboriginal language formally spoken across the plains of central Taiwan. Apparently, as with reports of Mark Twain's death, such claims are an exaggeration. I bought a collection of the prize winning essays and poems from last year's Ministry of Education Aboriginal Language Writing Contest, and not only are there a couple of pieces in Pazih, but there are even commentaries written in the same language! Certainly this is a cause for joy.

This morning before 6, Yumin's barking finally woke me up. I could tell from his bark that he had his beagly eye on a snake. No big deal, we get lots of snakes. Only worth mentioning for two reasons. First, there were two of these together, which is unusual. Second, the snakes are called Taiwan tree snakes (or 大頭蛇 Square-head snake, Keelung cat snake, Boiga kraepelini). They are only mildly poisonous. One of them seemed pretty long for a TTS. I prodded it off the ladder it had wrapped around, and as it moved into the underbrush, I estimated it to be over 190 cm long. I checked all my material, and the longest recorded length they have is 160 cm. So this one was had quite a long tail. And this is the end of this short tale.

Today we were visited by a very small moth.

How small? That huge pink blob in the photo is my left index finger.

You learn something every day.

If it were not for Mussolini, today we would probably not have the chance to enjoy Vivaldi. His music had been forgotten, but Mussolini, in his quest to inflate Italian pride, prompted musicians who dug out these almost extinct scores. The first people in the US to hear Vivaldi's music were FBI agents monitoring Fascist radio broadcasts.

Hope everybody is having a wonderful moon festival. We've come in after an evening of admiring the moon, drinking tea, and eating moon cakes.

Just at dusk, the dogs sang out to alert us to moonrise.

What is the wind in a typhoon like? you may ask. The east coast got Force 17 gales, but in Wulai, the winds were much tamer. But not gentle.

A big wind blows down trees, as they discovered recently in New York. A typhoon wind snaps the little bamboo: much more impressive than toppling a tree.

For some preliminary gusts, please click here:::

We put a fitted tarp on our car and parked it in a protected place. The wind blew off the tarp, but luckily it wrapped around the mirror. Otherwise, they would have picked it up on the radar in Vladivostok.

Bawnay said, "Strange, it didn't rain in our village." Yeah, they're drying out there, they got only 90mm of rain yesterday.

They lost their electric power. Sometimes it’s nice to spend some time without electricity."

Please remember that today is the most sacred of holidays, Talk Like A Pirate Day, and be sprightly about it, matey, if you know what’s good for you.

We celebrated TLAPD by hunkering down as this typhoon poured water all over us. Then at around three in the afternoon, the wind came up to blow. That's when I really got into the spirit of TLAPD, because the wind blew down a clump of my 巨竹 giant bamboo, which was finally, after how many years? getting gigantic: AARRGGHH!

Fortunately it fell away from the house, but the stalks were crushing a couple trees, so I got out a good saw and my laraw (headhunting knife) and went out to hack them down a bit, singing

Blow you winds in the morning,

Blow you winds Hi Ho,

It's clear away your giant bamboo

And Blow, Boys, Blow!

all the while ruminating on the deep question, what does Talk Like a Pirate Day (TLAPD) have to do with the pirates on the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD)? Worth considering.

An excellent essay on a subject I have wondered about, as I suppose most reading addicts do: why read so much when you forget so much?

In the NYTimes Book Review, The Plot Escapes Me, by James Collins.

Recording his journeys in Taiwan in 1869, Edward C Taintor wrote, "I had hitherto always held Keelung [基隆] to be the filthiest town in the universe, not deeming it within the bounds of possibility that a place could be worse than it; but a visit to Suao [蘇澳] forced me to confess my mistake. Suao thus far, in my experience, bears the palm, with little danger of losing it."

Not to be disrespectful, but if you look at the English language literature concerning Taiwan before 1945, whether written by explorers, scientists, or missionaries, the words that invariably pop up are 'dirty' and 'filthy.'

Not that everything was cleaned up immediately after the Japanese warlords surrendered. In the summer of 1973, Josh came for a visit. One day when we were coming out of the mountains, we reached Suao, which in those days was as far as the train from Taipei went. Near the train station, a lady by the road was selling sugar cane, which is delightful, delicious, and refreshing, so I asked Josh if he’d like some. Sure. We ordered a cane, and the lady began peeling it for us. She broke off one section a bit too vigorously, and it fell to the ground, almost landing in the putrid open sewer by her stand; the sewer was fed in part by a broken pipe flowing out of a 騎樓的柱子 pillar next to her.

Before the sugar cane had bounced, Josh said, "No, ask her to wash it." So I asked her to wash it. She was completely befuddled. "Wash it? What for?" "It fell on the ground." "So? Is there something wrong with that?" "But it’s dirty." "Dirty??" "Yes, it fell on the ground so it’s dirty." You could see she had no idea what I was complaining about, and kept on peeling the cane. I said, "Look, if you don't wash that piece, we aren't buying the sugar cane." She gave me a look that said, What won't these crazy foreigners come up with next, and washed the sugar cane for us… in the grey sewage flowing out of the pipe. Josh immediately lost his appetite for sugar cane.

So you see, progress has been made!

Today when I was cleaning this tea bowl, it slipped and broke. My old friend Tang Sefang gave me this in 1983. The cap broke in 1999. Sic transit gloria mundi
